The digit span backward test was used to assess working memory. Memory span is a common measure of working memory and short-term memory. WARNING: your browser does NOT have JavaScript enabled. The task is known as digit span when numbers are used. This measure was also performed online in Category 120. Repeat the sequence of numbers shown during the test. Exploratory factor analysis in a subset of 357 participants identified a five-factor structure: (1) attentional capacity (Multiple Object Tracking, Visual Working Memory, Digit Symbol Coding, Spatial Span), (2) search (Visual Search, TMT-A, TMT-B, Letter Cancellation) (3) Digit Span (4) Arithmetic and (5) Sustained Attention (GradCPT). This test is available for a subset of participants.įor non-specialists, the primary item of interest is Field 4282. A popular working memory test that is used in many cognitive and neuroscience research labs. Data collected include the number of digits and value of the number, the length of time the number was displayed, the time that the participant first entered and last entered a digit, the time taken to complete the test, the value of the number entered by the participant, whether or not the participant was correct, the maximum number of digits remembered, and whether the test was completed. The number became one digit longer each time they remembered correctly (up to a maximum of 12 digits). The number then disappeared and after a short while they were asked to enter the number onto the screen. Tests of memory span are often used to measure working memory capacity (Baddeley, 1990). The participant was shown a 2-digit number to remember. It, like the storage-and-processing tasks, did much better than simple digit span in accounting for aptitude test results. Participants are presented with lists of digits on the computer screen, and have to repeat them backward by clicking. This category contains data on a test designed to assess numeric short-term memory, as part of the touchscreen questionnaire. Assessment centre ⏵ Cognitive function ⏵ Numeric memory
